SIS Productions is thrilled to present Insatiable! Seattle's 6th Asian American Playwrights’ Festival, a week-long festival of play readings by local Asian American playwrights. With new works by Daniel Arreola, Maggie Lee, May Nguyen, and Zheng Wang, the festival will feature a diverse range of genres, from science fiction to family drama to experimental theater. You're sure to find just the thing to satisfy your hunger for exciting new plays!

The Tumbleweed Zephyr by Maggie Lee

Two brothers, Atticus and Kai, set off from New Providence for the Western Territories on the transcontinental train, the Tumbleweed Zephyr. But a simple journey by rail soon leads to adventure, romance, and long-lost echoes from the past, like a lonely train whistle through the deep desert sky. All aboard for a sci-fi Old West yarn with shiny brass steampunk trim!

Directed by Zanne Gerrard.
Featuring Brian Beckley, Henry Drew, Kenna Kettrick, Stephanie Kim, Agastya Kohli, Owen Yen, Moses Yim, and Kelsey Yuhara.


The Best Time You'll Never Talk About by Daniel Arreola

What started as an innocent encounter at a local bar, ends in chess match of words, torture, lies, secrets, understanding, trust, self-awareness, boundaries, a video camera, personal passions, and bacon. This two-character piece is inspired by Terrence McNally's SWEET EROS produced in 1968.

Directed by Richard Sloniker.
Featuring Billy Gleeson and Mariel Neto.


Making Short Works: Three One Acts by May Nguyen

Asked to fulfill their father's last wish, Vietnamese American siblings Thuy and Long find they hold the life of a man in their hands. Taken to Task follows Thuy and Long as they bridge the gaps between loyalty to their father, respect for the history of their people, and doing what they feel is right.
The first human expedition to the nearest habitable planet, affectionately called Grandma's House, is underway. Unpacking in Space (Parts 1 & 2) is a serial story of the three-person crew of the Kestral as they navigate the confines of their shuttle and the vastness of space on a journey of a lifetime.

Double Happiness by Zheng Wang

As Chinese American siblings Mary and Joey head to their father's house for the traditional Chinese New Year gathering, they both carry heavy burdens on their mind. Mary is recently divorced and has not told Dad. Thankfully, her ex-husband Kevin is willing to go with her and put on a front. Joey, leaving his boyfriend Stuart at home, dreads the inevitable questions from dad about his personal life. More importantly, this is the first Chinese New Year since their mother passed away, and Dad appears to have a hard time accepting that she is gone. Can Mary, Joey and Dad find happiness again, both on their own and as a family?

Directed by Maria Batayola.

Playwriting Workshop with Charles S. Waxberg

The SIS Writers Group is excited to present a Playwriting Workshop that will be beneficial for playwrights, directors and actors of all levels.

Focus of the session will be on the basic structure of scripts working from the top, Theme, down to individual scene conflict. This class will be helpful whether you're a new writer looking to get started or an experienced playwright looking for inspiration. Directors and actors will also benefit from the class.

Charles S. Waxberg, author of The Actors Script--script analysis for performers currently in its 13th printing, has taught playwriting, script analysis and acting for The Roundabout Theatre, Carnegie-Mellon University (MFA), Stella Adler Academy (NY and LA), and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He has had dozens of his plays produced in NYC, Los Angeles, and Seattle. He currently teaches for and is Artistic Director of Theatre 9/12.
